Ultimate protection & versatility.
JSAUX’s new ModCase for the ROG Ally X improves on its predecessor in every way to deliver enhanced protection and functionality without breaking the bank.
What’s in the box?
Inside the package you’ll find the protective case itself, a hard-shell travel cover, a strap module for power banks and other attachments, a detachable stand, plus the user manual and warranty card.
A set of pull-tab stickers is also included in the box. These can be used to make the process of attaching the case to the handheld a lot easier, as you can see below.
Installation
The previous version of this ModCase, created for the original Ally, was tricky to install due to its tight fit. The top part of the case would snag on the triggers and bumpers, making me concerned about potentially damaging those buttons.
Fortunately, the new model tackles this issue with the inclusion of handy pull tabs that make the installation process a lot easier. As mentioned previously, JSAUX included extra tabs in the package, in case you need to remove and re-install the case a few times.
Design & build quality
The JSAUX ModCase is well designed and wraps around the Ally X nicely with a snug fit. The handles are made of a rugged plastic material that provides solid protection against accidental drops. They also have a grippy texture that feels great in the hand.
The case features precise cutouts for all the vents and ports around the top and back of the handheld. They were designed to help keep the Ally X cool during gameplay, as well as providing unrestricted access to all of its ports. Throughout my testing, I didn’t experience any overheating issues at all, even during extended gaming sessions.
It’s worth noting that the added thickness from the case might make it incompatible with some docking stations on the market, but I can confirm that it does work with JSAUX’s own 6-in1 dock, which I reviewed recently.
Travel cover
The hard-shell cover that can be attached to the front of the case adds an extra layer of protection when traveling, allowing you to toss your Ally X into a bag without the fear of damaging its screen or thumbsticks.
This cover includes an opening at the top for one of the USB-C ports, so you can charge your handheld on the go. On top of that, there are four convenient microSD slots located inside the cover.
Attachments & features
The detachable modules that come with this case are fantastic. The strap attachment can hold power banks, SSD enclosures and USB hubs, effectively expanding the functionality of the device.
While testing the case, I attached the hefty Anker 737 power bank to it and was surprised to see how well it worked. Sure, it makes the whole setup a lot heavier, but I wouldn’t mind lugging it around if it meant I could extend my gaming sessions during long flights.
The flip-out stand is another much welcome upgrade. The stand on the previous ModCase was thin and a bit flimsy, but this new one is quite sturdy and way more stable.
Overall, the build quality of this case is outstanding and it delivers a great combination of protection and practicality.
Pricing
The JSAUX ModCase for the ROG Ally X can be purchased directly from their website or over at Amazon for $29.99, but it’s been so popular that it’s currently sold out. This isn’t so surprising as it’s a great price, particularly when compared to other options like the dbrand Killswitch case. That one starts at $59.95 for the “essential kit,” which doesn’t come with a travel cover, and if you want the complete “travel kit,” you’ll have to spend a whopping $74.95.
Note: the product is now back in stock on JSAUX’s website and Amazon.
