Somewhere in Japan: Candid Photos by Vincent Versluis
Published Jun 9, 2026
Amsterdam-based photographer and art director Vincent Versluis approaches Japan less like a traveler and more like a director, photographing the country as a series of held, spontaneous moments rather than a checklist of sights. His street photos move between glowing city corners, forest roads, temple grounds, riverside scenes and quiet residential streets, building a view of the country that feels contemplative rather than touristic.
Vincent’s strongest images are composed around small interruptions: a cyclist cutting through warm afternoon light, a passerby framed by neon, a lone figure waiting outside a ramen shop, or a deer stepping into the entrance of a café. At night, his palette shifts into deep greens, amber shopfronts and electric signage, giving ordinary streets the tension of a film still.
Across the series, Japan is framed as a place of contrasts, dense and calm, ancient and modern, structured and unpredictable. Vincent excels at finding beauty in those overlaps. For more of his travel photography, take a look at his Behance portfolio and follow him on Instagram.
