Desert X AlUla Visitor Centre by KWY.studio

Designed by KWY.studio, the Desert X AlUla 2024 Visitor Centre in Saudi Arabia represents a harmonious blend of architectural ingenuity and natural beauty.

Strategically positioned at the end of a narrow canyon, the visitor centre is almost hidden within the rock formations, offering a secluded yet awe-inspiring experience. The building’s placement at a cul-de-sac dictates not only its position but also its spatial organization, creating a seamless integration with the surrounding landscape. Visitors are treated to an uninterrupted vista towards the West, which starkly contrasts with the canyon walls to the North, East, and South. This juxtaposition of views emphasizes the stratified cliffs, making them an integral part of the visitor experience.

One of the key features of the design is the 45-degree rotation of the courtyard. This rotational shift creates unique spatial dynamics, providing shaded vestibules on the East and West while generating entrances to key functions such as a café, shop and events room on the North and South. The diagonal views framed by this rotation offer distinctive glimpses through the building toward the surrounding landscape, enhancing the connection between the built environment and nature.
