Death by Sugar: Porcelain Sculptures by Jacqueline Tse

Published Mar 17, 2022

Death by Sugar is an ongoing series of porcelain sculptures by American artist Jacqueline Tse.

“My work speaks to the anxieties of being human, particularly the dilemmas of everyday urban life. It is an ongoing exploration of shameless consumerism, both tangible and digital, to celebrate the beauty and flaws of this fragile condition.

In this current body of work I call ‘Death by Sugar,’ I use a variety of sculpting techniques such as hand building, carving, plaster mold making, slip casting, and slip piping. Intricate porcelain confections are created with an irresistibly perturbing charm, resulting in a surreal dimension beyond dreams where sugar and fetus skulls are remixed into a delicate bittersweet pop narrative.”
