Contemporary Engravings: Intricate Ink Illustrations by Pookiee
Published Aug 25, 2026
Thai artist Pookiee creates striking black and white illustrations using ink on paper, stacking thousands of individual strokes into portraits that borrow the density and discipline of classical engraving. Hair, fabric, skin, even rain are all crafted from the same repertoire of hatched lines, pulled tight or loosened depending on what the surface needs to represent.
Pookiee often photographs the process, from sketch to finished composition, revealing just how meticulous the technique is. Starting with delicate pencil outlines, the artist gradually develops each drawing by hand, building up layers of fine ink lines until the image gains remarkable depth and dimension. Some pieces reference historic artworks, including Giovanni Strazza’s The Veiled Virgin, while her original creations explore more surreal ideas through distorted bodies, unusual perspectives and dreamlike interactions.
