After Dark: Nighttime Wildlife Scenes by Nicholas Moegly

Midwestern illustrator and painter Nicholas Moegly creates atmospheric scenes suspended between the familiar and the uncanny. Focusing primarily on dark, nostalgic imagery shaped by light and shadow, he transforms suburban neighborhoods, empty storefronts and forgotten roadside spaces into moody cinematic environments.

Many of his illustrations unfold at twilight, when neighborhoods empty out, porch lights glow, cars idle in driveways and nobody can be seen outside. Nicholas’ inquisitive animals, including deer and foxes, wander through backyards and intersections, cross abandoned gas stations and venture into places seemingly emptied of people. Even the most ordinary settings, a backyard tent, a closed swimming pool or a dimly lit alley, take on a mysterious quality. In one scene, dinosaurs appear, pushing the image further into dreamlike territory.
