Wildlife in Wood: Amazing Driftwood Sculptures by James Doran-Webb

Published Jun 27, 2025

British artist James Doran-Webb is a master of transformation. Using salvaged driftwood and an extraordinary eye for movement and anatomy, he crafts sculptures that capture the raw energy of the animal kingdom. From galloping horses to soaring eagles, his lifelike creations are crafted entirely from reclaimed wood, designed to withstand the elements and time itself.

Known globally for his monumental public works, James’ creations can be found everywhere from open-air gardens to exposed mountaintops, designed not just to endure the elements, but to embrace them. Behind their rugged beauty lies a surprising level of engineering, each large-scale sculpture is backed by structural plans and calculations to ensure it stands strong for decades.

Raised across Europe and the US, he developed his skills early, restoring antiques and crafting furniture before discovering driftwood as his true medium in the Philippines in the early 2000s. There, inspired by the landscape and local craftsmanship, he began shaping discarded wood into breathtaking animal forms, each piece a tribute to movement, nature and sustainability.

Beyond his art, James is committed to environmental stewardship through his “80,000 Trees” project, which plants one seedling for every kilo of wood used. This July, his work will be on display at The Game Fair at Ragley Hall, offering visitors a chance to experience these wild wooden wonders up close.
