What Lies Beneath: Paintings by Jason Limon

San Antonio-based artist Jason Limon is back on the grid with another selection of skeleton-themed artworks, this time featuring familiar objects and scenes peeled apart to reveal the bones hidden within. Torn packaging, cracked surfaces and frayed textiles divide each composition into overlapping realities, exposing the bones of animals and people.

Jason draws much of his visual language from the discarded materials that have fascinated him throughout his life, including vintage matchboxes, cigarette packets and product labels. Their worn, nostalgic surfaces contrast with the dark spaces below, where skeletons go about their business, cycling, sewing, smoking and carrying out other strangely purposeful tasks.

Other works feature richly patterned fabrics inspired by embroidery and decorative textiles. These painted layers curl away from animal bodies and natural scenes, revealing skeletal forms while continuing the illusion that each image has been physically torn open. Despite their connection to mortality, Jason’s paintings rarely feel grim. His captivating figures instead become vessels for shared experiences, bringing curiosity, humour and tenderness to the balance between life and death.
