Weightless Architecture by Sven Hauth
Published Apr 17, 2026
Kiel Fragments is a project by Hamburg-based CG artist Sven Hauth where he takes familiar architecture and pulls it apart, literally. In this series, buildings from his hometown are sliced into self-contained volumes and suspended against open skies, turning solid structures into weightless objects.
While traveling across eastern Germany and photographing architecture from below, Sven kept running into the same problem, vertical lines collapsing into awkward perspective. As he explains, “The converging lines of the vertical vanishing points made it hard to arrive at anything visually pleasing, and I kept thinking I should just isolate the interesting parts to make them float in mid-air.” Back in his studio, each building is cut into sections, then digitally rebuilt, including the parts the camera never captured. Undersides are reconstructed, volumes are closed, and fragments are refined until they read as complete forms from every angle.
What starts as straightforward documentation shifts into something more speculative, where hotels, apartment blocks and facades lose their grounding and begin to behave like floating modular sculptures. What was once fixed in place now hovers, precise and slightly unreal.
