Until the Water: Haunting Portraits of Louisiana’s Changing Landscapes by Frank Relle

For more than six years, Louisiana photographer Frank Relle has explored the state’s bayous, lakes and swamps after dark, creating a collection of images that feels suspended somewhere between documentary photography and a dream. His ongoing series Until the Water captures cypress trees, abandoned buildings and flooded landscapes illuminated by carefully staged light, unveiling places that seem at once timeless and fleeting.

Working from a flatboat, Frank spends 40 to 60 nights each year camping across Louisiana, planning his journeys around moon phases and seasonal water levels. After positioning his custom-built lighting system, he steps into the water and photographs from a tripod capable of standing in depths of up to 25 feet. Moonlight, shifting clouds and changing weather become collaborators in the process, allowing each long exposure to capture a unique convergence of natural and artificial light.
