Type with Personality: The Ampersand Crowd by Diego Pinilla Amaya
Published Jun 26, 2025
New York-based designer and art director Diego Pinilla Amaya brings type to life in The Ampersand Crowd, a playful project that reimagines the beloved ampersand symbol as a series of fun, anthropomorphic characters.
Inspired by the ampersand’s naturally elegant form, Diego asked a simple question: What if this character had a personality? His answer? A refined, dressed up gentleman wearing a black suit, a white glove and a shiny, polished shoe. From there, the concept expanded into a full cast of ten unique personas, each one styled to represent different figures like a baseball player, a fireman and even a clown.
Equal parts character design and typographic tribute, the series is a delightful exercise in imagination that speaks to the expressive potential of design’s most beloved glyph. If you’d like to discover more of Diego’s work, take a look at his portfolio on on Behance.
