Tiny Worlds on Pencil Tips: The Micro-Sculptures of Salavat Fidai

Charlotte-based artist Salavat Fidai transforms one of the most ordinary objects imaginable, the humble pencil, into something extraordinary. Working with a scalpel, magnifying glass and a lot of patience, he carves impossibly detailed micro-sculptures from graphite, turning pencil tips into miniature works of art.
Salavat’s creations range from pop-culture icons and everyday objects to animals, architecture and intricate symbols, all rendered with astonishing precision at a scale often no larger than a grain of rice. The graphite is so brittle that one wrong move can destroy hours of work, but he embraces this fragility as part of the creative process. For him, these sculptures are more than just technical feats, they’re part of a larger exploration of what art can be. “Everyone uses a pencil as a tool,” he explains. “But I wanted to make the pencil itself into a rare piece of art.”
His work and process are also documented in two books, The Pencilbook and The Pencilbook 2, which feature hundreds of high-quality photographs of his miniature sculptures alongside his biography. Both volumes are available to purchase on Amazon.
