Threaded Dreams: The Textile Art of Flávia Itiberê

Flávia Itiberê is a Brazilian artist who works with delicate embroidery and large-scale textile installations to create imaginative pieces that explore femininity, memory and emotion. Her practice is subtle and meticulous, but there’s a quiet defiance to it too, a deliberate shift away from the fast, disposable nature of the fashion world she once worked in, toward something slower, lasting, and deeply personal.

Although her creative world has long overlapped with that of her partner, painter Rafael Silveira, it’s only in recent years that the two started formally collaborating. Stitch by stitch, they’ve built a surreal, symbolic and richly layered body of work that merges embroidery with painting and installation. Flávia’s pieces have been shown in major Brazilian institutions like the Oscar Niemeyer Museum and are now part of collections across the globe.

This month, Flávia and Rafael are presenting a joint exhibition at Dorothy Circus Gallery in London (June 13–July 10), bringing their distinct but connected practices together in one space. While Rafael’s oil paintings offer vivid psychological portraits, Flávia’s embroidered works speak in softer tones, yet both draw from the same dreamlike space. It’s a thoughtful and quietly powerful pairing worth stepping into.
