The Art & Science of Particles: Hambardzum Vardanyan’s Elegant Digital Chaos
Published May 16, 2025
In his ongoing series The Art and Science of Particles, digital artist and computational designer Hambardzum Vardanyan dives deep into the strange beauty of simulation. Using Houdini as his playground, Hambardzum wrangles million of particles into motion, creating delicate, abstract forms that feel like they’re caught somewhere between physics and poetry. The results are quietly mesmerizing, swirling fields of color and form that seem to defy gravity, logic and sometimes even scale.
Hambardzum’s work sits at the intersection of math and emotion. Algorithms, motion studies and advanced simulation techniques are at the core of his process, but what comes through isn’t cold or mechanical. Each render carries a soft, almost meditative quality, like watching weather systems from another dimension. There’s an otherworldly lightness to it all, helped along by a dreamy color palette and an intuitive sense of space.
