Strange Wooden Creatures: Sculptures by Donald Wasswa
Published Sep 16, 2025
Ugandan artist Donald Wasswa imagines unusual new lifeforms through his striking wooden sculptures. Smooth, rounded bodies paired with sharp, claw-like limbs give his creations an otherworldly quality, hovering somewhere between the organic and mechanical.
His works range from insect-like figures standing on spindly legs to abstract clusters that swell into biomorphic forms. The natural richness of the wood adds a sense of presence, making the pieces feel almost alive.
Working from Kampala, Donald’s practice revolves around transformation. By reshaping natural forms into uncanny hybrids, he prompts us to question how objects evolve and how they might in turn shape us. His wooden creatures embody that vision: unsettling, elegant, and charged with possibility.
Donald Wasswa is represented by Circle Art Gallery, where you can explore more of his remarkable work.
