Sons & Daughters of the Rift: Afrofuturistic Visions by Osborne Macharia

Published Mar 24, 2025

Osborne Macharia’s Rift portrait series is a powerful visual exploration of history, culture and imagination. At its heart, the project celebrates beadwork as a deeply rooted tradition in many African communities, symbolizing beauty, identity and social standing. But this isn’t just about looking back. With an Afrofuturistic lens, Osborne reimagines the Great Rift Valley as a borderless space, where cultures converge to form a beadwork-inspired tribe unlike anything we’ve seen before.

The portraits themselves are absolutely captivating. Each figure is adorned with intricate accessories that speak to heritage while pushing the artist’s vision. The use of dramatic lighting and meticulously arranged compositions not only highlights the craftsmanship of the beadwork but also imbues every shot with a sense of power and mystery. It’s as if these characters exist in a parallel world where tradition and fantasy meet.

While Daughters of the Rift centers on women of the tribe, Sons of the Rift zooms in on the young men, portraying them as generals and decorated war heroes. Both parts of the project ask you to look beyond traditional boundaries and imagine a bold future built on the richness of the past.
