Ski: Oil on Canvas Paintings by Mitchell Fenton

Published Mar 14, 2019

‘Ski’ is a playful collection of new paintings by Canadian painter Mitchell Fenton, celebrating the sport of downhill skiing in a vintage era.

The oil on canvas paintings are currently being exhibited at Alison Milne Art Gallery in Toronto and will be on display until April 20th, 2019.

“An exhibition of new paintings celebrating the sport of downhill skiing. We’re going back to its origins, to a time of adventurers, risk-takers, tricksters, acrobats and romantics… on minimal equipment.

Legend has it, the artist’s father lost a stripe while serving in the Second World War as a flight instructor, flying low in a no-fly zone. He flew his Tiger Moth too close to town and dipped his wing for Fenton’s mother to see. He broke the rules. Such is love and war.

Hats off to those guys and gals who dip their wing, who do the flips, backscratchers, twisters, daffies, somersaults and double-doubles… all in an effort to catch the eye of one they love.

Mitchell Fenton’s exhibition SKI celebrates the golden age of Skiing and Romance!

Fenton’s paintings borrow colour, characters and tone from vintage ski posters from the 30’s and 40’s. They all have details taken from countless historical photographs, and are laid over images of Modern-day freestyle skiers taken from the World Wide Web.”
