Shifting Perspectives: Dynamic Illustrations by Koen De Gussem

Published Feb 5, 2025

Belgian illustrator Koen De Gussem has a talent for pulling you into worlds that are just a little off-kilter, in the best possible way. With a background in animation and his current role as an art director in video production, it’s his work as an illustrator under the name “Kaan Illustration” that’s really caught our attention.

His raw, dynamic style is a combination of bold lines, punchy color palettes and juxtaposed elements, creating pieces that hover somewhere between the awkward and the unsettling. For Koen, it’s all about inviting the viewer into the narrative. His illustrations feel like snapshots from a bizarre and fascinating scenario, cryptic and full of energy. In his own words:

“I love creating scenarios that feel a bit awkward and even disturbing, without going too dark or cynical.”

Koen’s unique style hasn’t gone unnoticed. Over the past year, he has worked with some impressive editorial clients, including BBC Science Focus, Apple News, The New York Times Advertising and The Washington Post. Whatever the client or project, Koen’s work is always bold, thought-provoking, and unmistakably his.
