Roar Poser: New Mirror-Polished Stainless Steel Sculptures by Ferdi B Dick

South African artist Ferdi B Dick is back on the grid with Roar Poser, a new collection of mirror-polished animal sculptures. The latest trio, Lion Roar, Rhino Roar and Giraffe Roar, combines the exaggerated confidence of classical statuary with the playful language of cartoons.

Ferdi pushes their personalities by posing them less like wildlife and more like mascots working a photo op. The rhino stands in contrapposto, weight shifted to one leg, channeling the stance of Michelangelo’s David, the lion throws its arms wide, and the giraffe stands with its hands resting proudly across its rounded belly. Their eyes are all marked by recessed star shapes, adding another unique element and giving each character an icon-like expression.

Created in mirror-polished 316 stainless steel, the highly reflective surfaces pull their surroundings and viewers directly into each sculpture. The series also exists in onyx, where the same exaggerated forms take on a more serene, ancient quality.
