Paper-Like Wonders in Acrylic: Bill Braun’s Painted Illusions

Published Mar 17, 2025

Bill Braun’s paintings are a fun trick on your perceptions. At first glance, you might think you’re looking at a kid’s craft project made of paper, but everything you see is actually meticulously painted in acrylic on canvas using the trompe l’oeil technique, which literally means “to fool the eye.” Trompe l’oeil often gravitates toward polished and dramatic realism, but Bill adds his own twist by infusing his artwork with a lighthearted and whimsical touch.

His paintings look so real that you’ll be tempted to reach out and touch them. The details are astonishingly precise, and even simple things, like staples or cardboard, feel incredibly convincing. Although there’s a childlike charm to his painted scenes, they’re executed with the sophisticated skill of an artist who’s spent decades perfecting his craft.
