Order From Chaos: LEGO Color Constructions by Katherine Duclos

American artist Katherine Duclos transforms LEGO bricks into intricately textured abstract compositions that sit somewhere between painting, sculpture and mosaic. Built one piece at a time using carefully arranged, often spray-painted bricks, the works shimmer with changing light, creating fields of color that preserve memories of specific places and moments in time.

The series was created for Katherine’s 2024 solo exhibition at the Vancouver Art Gallery while she prepared to move her family from the home they had lived in for seven years. As an autistic artist with ADHD, she describes the repetitive process of arranging thousands of modular bricks as a way of bringing order to an otherwise overwhelming period of transition, using the bricks as units of color, much like paint or paper, to transform a childhood toy into a deeply personal artistic medium.

Born in Massachusetts and now based in Canada, Katherine earned her MFA from Pratt Institute and has exhibited throughout North America. In 2023, she collaborated with the LEGO Group on a large-scale installation for Art Basel Miami, the subject of the documentary Small Tiny Starts.
