Optimistic Machines: Retro-Futuristic 3D Concepts by Shaun Wellens
Published Apr 14, 2026
Manchester-based designer Shaun Wellens envisions machines from an alternate timeline, one where mid-century optimism never faded. His projects combine industrial design logic with speculative fiction, shaping machines that look functional, familiar and slightly out of place.
His series of 3D concepts spans humanoid droids, imagined institutional equipment, and enforcement machines, each grounded in a distinct fictional purpose. The “Kriket 3000” channels 60s and 70s product design into a humanoid form with rounded surfaces, soft plastics and exposed components. The “Botanicanalysis T200” pushes further into worldbuilding, a mock-archival piece of off-world lab equipment with a documented history of manufacturing flaws and museum preservation.
Where those pieces feel more approachable, the “Iron Duke” and “Blue Squire” shift into a more somber tone, angular enforcement droids that borrow from 14th-century English armour to project authority through geometry alone. Shaun then strips things back completely with “The Ever-Present,” a four-legged robotic entity where the aesthetic is purely functional. As he puts it, “…as if approached solely from an engineering point of view where shapes may not make sense from an outsider’s perspective, but they give a sense of absolutely being there for a reason.”
