Mysterious Faces Emerge From Books in Paola Grizi’s Striking Sculptures
Published May 6, 2025
Italian artist Paola Grizi brilliantly combines literature and sculpture to create stunning works of art. Using materials like terracotta and bronze, her pieces depict faces mysteriously emerging from the pages of books. Each sculpture tells its own story, capturing a moment frozen in time where the folds of the “paper” guide your eyes to expressions that capture something deeply human.
The textures in her work transition smoothly from delicate, almost paper-like surfaces to the solid, expressive faces that seem to rise from them. Sometimes these faces gaze out with a sense of calm, and other times they emerge partially, with just enough detail to spark curiosity. This balance of mystery and mastery reflects her personal connection to the written word. Before dedicating herself fully to sculpting, Paola studied Classics and Italian Literature, even working as a journalist and editor. Her love for language can be seen in her ability to make books the literal backbone of her artistic narratives.
