Monuments Series: A Blend of Photography, CGI & Pop Culture by Benoit Lapray
Published Dec 11, 2023
“Monuments” is an ongoing series by French photographer and creative retoucher Benoit Lapray, which we have featured here in the past. Benoit has just released the third chapter of the series, produced in a recent collaboration with CGI designer Emmanuelle Vonck. This collection of images is an imaginative exploration of pop culture icons transformed into awe-inspiring, larger-than-life sculptures placed throughout Paris.
“So it is in Paris, this ‘museum city’ that radiates throughout the world, that my new series of photographs is set.”
“Here, frozen on huge stone pedestals, cult characters from popular culture are raised to the rank of ‘Monuments’. It is a way for me to underline that these heroes of fiction are today part of the world’s cultural heritage.”
The images were initially captured using traditional film photography. Benoit then digitized the negatives, which were edited by Emmanuelle to incorporate the CGI elements. The figurines of the characters that inspired this project were scanned in a studio using advanced photogrammetry techniques.
Benoit views this series as an innovative exploration of image creation, blending old and new methods to offer a fresh perspective on photography. You can learn more about the series on Benoit’s website.
