Monsters and Creatures: Playful 3D Characters by Mariano Garza

Monsters and Creatures is a series of 3D illustrations by Monterrey-based designer and illustrator Mariano Garza, set in a strange woodland world filled with a weird and wonderful cast of colorful beings. Created using Blender and Substance Painter, the series brings together playful character design, expressive personalities and beautifully textured 3D surfaces.

Mariano gives each creature its own peculiar anatomy, from oversized eyes and wandering limbs to multiple heads, tiny horns and unexpected combinations of shapes. The cozy, fabric-like textures covering many of the characters give them the appearance of knitted toys or handmade sculptures.

The surrounding environment, with twisted trees, dark rocks and mysterious forms, suggests a much larger world beyond each frame. Mariano keeps the tone lighthearted throughout, creating a collection of monsters that feel more mischievous than menacing.
