Lepidoptera: Macro Photos of Butterflies and Moths by Eugenijus Kavaliauskas

Lithuanian photographer Eugenijus Kavaliauskas turns butterflies and moths into striking studies of colour, pattern and texture in his macro series Lepidoptera.

After a successful, award-winning run in bird photography, Eugenijus decided to shift his focus to a very different challenge: insects. His 2022 close-up image of an ant’s head recently went viral again for its strange, alien appearance, but this series takes a more elegant approach, highlighting the natural beauty of winged specimens.

Shot against deep black backgrounds, the images isolate each insect like a living textile sample. Scales, hairs, spots, stripes and wing structures come forward in sharp detail, revealing how much visual complexity is contained inside these tiny forms. Some look painted, others patterned like fabric, stained glass or camouflage. Across the series, Eugenijus shows Lepidoptera not as delicate background creatures, but as intricate design objects shaped by colour, function and evolution.
