Ice Formations: Photos of Frozen Methane Bubbles by Ryota Kajita
Japanese photographer Ryota Kajita captures the beautiful (and alarming) methane bubbles trapped below the surface of Alaska’s frozen lakes, in his personal series ‘Ice Formation’.
“Organic matter in thawing lakes has been releasing large amounts of methane as it decomposes. The gas rises until it is trapped just beneath the ice. Kajita has been trudging into the wilderness for five years to photograph these bubbles and is fascinated by their mesmerizing patterns.”
