Graphite and Silence: Fog Studies by Darrel Rhea
Published Apr 23, 2026
Seattle-based photographer Darrel Rhea is back on the grid with Winter Light, a series of monochrome images captured during foggy winter mornings at Washington State’s Skagit Bay Estuary.
Darrel treats fog as a compositional tool. It strips away context, flattening horizon lines, dissolving backgrounds into open fields of gray, leaving only the essentials: a swan mid-wingbeat, two stones breaking still water, a heron balanced on driftwood. The results read less as photographs and more like graphite studies on paper, each subject rendered with soft gradients and fine tonal shifts.
Across the series, detail is reduced rather than enhanced. Texture replaces contrast, and space does most of the work. It’s a considered approach that turns a familiar wetland into something slower and more abstract, each frame measured and composed with the restraint of a pencil drawing.
