Flemish Superheroes: Creative Series by Sacha Goldberger
Published Sep 11, 2023
French photographer Sacha Goldberger creates amusing portraits that reimagine iconic superheroes and other pop culture characters with a Flemish Renaissance flair. In this ongoing project, familiar faces from the comic book universe such as Batman, Superman, Captain America, Wolverine and Wonder Woman are transformed into 16th-century Flemish portraits.
Each character is wearing an intricate reinterpretation of their famous costumes and posed as if they were subjects of commissioned works from the Renaissance era. The superhero motif in this compilation is a progression from his “Mamika” series, where he portrayed his grandmother as a superhero. With the Super Flemish series, he continues this exploration, adding a new layer of complexity by merging the modern superhero trope with classical art conventions.
