Expressive Monumental Faces by Andrés Aguirre

Ecuadorian artist Andrés Aguirre creates expressive sculptures that sit somewhere between portraiture, abstraction and ancient monument. Drawing on his background in architecture, he works across wood, metal and stone, developing a varied practice shaped by careful construction and a strong awareness of form.

Faces appear repeatedly throughout Andrés’ work, stretched into tall silhouettes, reduced to geometric features or transformed through spirals, hollow openings and exaggerated proportions. Some figures feel quiet and introspective, while others seem to be shouting at the top of their lungs, with open mouths and heightened expressions.

His sculptures balance the structure of constructivism with organic forms inspired by nature and primitive art. Cracks, knots and irregularities remain visible in the wood, becoming part of each figure rather than flaws to be concealed.
