ESR Qi2 3-in-1 Wireless Charging Station Review: Keeping it Cool

A few months ago, we checked out a couple of MagSafe-compatible wireless chargers from ESR, and they have recently rolled out an upgraded version of that lineup.

This time around, they incorporated a new feature to tackle one of the biggest headaches people face when charging: overheating. They call it CryoBoost, and it’s an advanced cooling system that promises to deliver ultra-fast charging speeds while keeping your devices nice and cool.

In this article, we’re going to take a closer look at the latest addition to that product lineup, the new 3-in-1 Wireless Charging Station, to see what’s different and if it really delivers on its promises.

What’s in the box?

Inside the well-organized package you’ll find the Qi2 3-in-1 Wireless Charging Station, a portable Apple Watch module, a USB-C to USB-C cable and the 30W USB-C charger, as well as a warranty card and the quick start guide.

Design & Build Quality

The new 3-in-1 Charging Station with CryoBoost looks a lot like the old one, with a few small differences. It’s got the same clean aesthetic we loved in the original, but now it features a blue light ring around the magnetic lock that lights up when it’s charging, as well as vents for the fan mechanism, which is the biggest selling point of the new model.

ESR sent us a white unit for this review but a super sleek black option is also available. Here’s a side-by-side comparison with the black variant of the original model we previously tested:

Left: The previous model in black. Right: The new CryBoost version.
The magnetic charging lock now includes an LED ring that lights up while charging.

The stand is designed to accommodate an iPhone, Apple Watch and AirPods or other earbuds simultaneously, keeping everything nice and tidy.

The charging station comes with the same detachable Apple Watch module that was included with the previous model. This small USB-C module can be easily removed, making it a handy and portable way to charge your Apple Watch pretty much anywhere.

Overall, this new version looks great and feels solid. It’s definitely a step up from the original, which was already pretty sleek and well-made.

Performance

Performance is of course the biggest improvement on the new 3-in-1 charging station. It offers the same powerful and reliable charging experience as its predecessor, delivering up to 15W fast charging for the iPhone and 5W for the Apple Watch and AirPods, but it comes with a key improvement.

One of the main issues with wireless chargers is that they tend to heat up while transferring power to connected devices, and if things gets a bit too hot, the charging process might slow down or completely stop.

ESR’s new charging station tackles this issue by incorporating a cooling fan and heat-dissipating components designed to prevent overheating and ensure the best charging speeds possible. The company first rolled out this “CryoBoost” technology back in 2022 and they’ve now fine-tuned it even more in 2024 to boost its efficiency.

It’s worth noting that this cooling system only applies to the MagSafe ring that charges your iPhone. The charging base for the earbuds and the portable Apple Watch module are still the same in this new model.

During our testing the charger performed incredibly well, just like its predecessor. But we do have a couple of minor nitpicks, mainly for those who intend to use this charging station in their bedroom.

The blue light that comes on while charging is a nice touch and doesn’t really get in the way when you’re using it in your office or living room. But it can be a bit of a nuisance if you have it right next to your bed on your nightstand.

On top of that, while you probably won’t notice the cooling fan at all during the day when there’s a lot of noise around, it’s definitely more audible at night in a quiet bedroom. So it’s something you might want to keep in mind.

Price

Priced at $69.99, the ESR Qi2 3-in-1 Wireless Charging Station is competitively positioned against other brands like Anker and Belkin. But even though it sits at a similar price point, the added CryoBoost technology helps set it apart, offering more value for anyone looking for a reliable and efficient charging solution.

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Sleek, minimalist design that fits well in any setting
  • Excellent build quality
  • Fast wireless charging
  • Capable of charging up to 3 devices simultaneously
  • The CryoBoost feature keeps the iPhone cool and ensures consistent charging speeds
  • Good value for money

Cons

  • The LED light around the magnetic ring may be distracting when used on a nightstand.
  • The cooling fan, although not very loud, can be noticeable in quiet environments such as a bedroom.

Verdict

The new ESR Qi2 3-in-1 Wireless Charging Station looks and performs even better than its predecessor, with the added benefit of ESR’s CryBoost cooling technology. If you’re looking for a versatile charging solution that will keep your devices cool at home, in the office or even when traveling, this modular stand offers great value for money and is well worth considering.
