Earth Murals: Ephemeral Land Art by David Popa
Published Dec 1, 2023
American artist David Popa turns natural landscapes into breathtaking, large-scale murals that seem to come to life within their original surroundings.
While many artists confine their creativity to a canvas, Popa’s medium is the earth itself. He uses natural pigments mixed with locally sourced water to create intricate site-specific artworks, which are then captured from a bird’s-eye view using a drone. His art is transient and ephemeral, changing with the seasons and weather, which adds an element of fleeting beauty to his work. From his website:
“Popa’s work seeks to enter into the realm of anthropology as it relates to origin, nature and the destiny of human beings.”
“By using natural pigments such as charcoal, earth pigments and ground shells, he uses the same raw materials that would have been used in the earliest cave paintings 40,000 years ago.”
