Distorted Pop Culture Paintings by Mikael Takacs
Published Apr 16, 2025
If you’ve been following the grid, you might remember us shining a spotlight on Mikael Takacs, the Stockholm-based artist redefining marbling for a modern audience. His latest works delve even deeper into the world of pop culture, transforming familiar icons like Super Mario, Spider-Man, Scrooge McDuck and The Simpsons into mesmerizing, distorted portraits.
Mikael’s tool of choice is a pipette, which he uses to carefully apply acrylic paint to the canvas before dragging it into intricate patterns with sticks, combs and other tools. The result is a creative collision of abstract swirls and iconic figures that are instantly recognizable.
Interestingly, the marbling method he specializes in isn’t new. In fact, it has roots going back to 12th century Japan, where it was known as “Suminagashi,” and later made its way to Europe as “Ebru” through the Ottoman Empire. By combining this centuries-old technique with his daring interpretations of pop culture, Mikael creates something truly unique, proving that even the most traditional methods can find fresh life in the hands of a bold artist.
