Delightful Unease: Koichiro Takagi’s Mixed-Media Creations
Published Jul 2, 2025
Tokyo-based artist Koichiro Takagi combines painting, embroidery, silkscreen, collage, and stencil work to create thought-provoking mixed-media pieces.
After studying silkscreen printing in San Francisco and cutting his teeth as a painter in New York, Koichiro returned to Tokyo in 2005, where he’s been building his strange, utopian realms ever since. His work explores what he calls “uncomfortableness,” patchworking the past and present into bright, mystical worlds that keep you guessing. Populated by animals, masked figures, and cryptic messages, his scenes feel playful yet slightly eerie, a punk rock spirit woven with folklore and street art grit.
You’ll find Koichiro’s art in Tokyo’s top galleries, and his bold designs have also appeared in collaborations with brands like Paul Smith and Beams. If you’re curious to see more of his weird and wonderful universe, check out his website and follow him on Instagram for the latest updates.
