Alien Landscapes: Infrared Photography by Roland Kraemer
Published Apr 13, 2026
Munich-based photographer and visual artist Roland Kraemer turns familiar terrain into something unrecognizable in Alien, an ongoing series that pushes landscape photography into stranger territory. Using infrared imaging, he reframes glaciers and coastal rock formations as shifting, otherworldly surfaces.
The transformation is driven by process. Infrared photography captures wavelengths beyond human vision, and Roland leans into that distortion, amplifying mineral traces, surface textures and subtle elevation changes, turning landscapes into layered, painterly fields. Meltwater pools look like interstellar voids, while ridges and cracks echo biological forms or eroded structures. What begins as documentation of remote locations becomes a study in perception, where nature holds its structure as its appearance slips into something unfamiliar.
