Aimer/Marie: Illustration Series by Jules Julien
Published Jun 24, 2014
“Aimer/Marie” is a minimalist series by talented French illustrator Jules Julien.
“I completed this installation in December 2010 for La Chapelle des Calvairiennes – now an art centre. When I produce work for a show, it’s a more introspective process. I was given carte blanche so considered the chapel’s history: the nuns who used to live there and the femininity this inspired. I started with an anagram of ‘aimer’ (to love) between ‘Marie’ (the Virgin Mary) and used red and white to represent passion and virginity – a mille-feuilles effect that became a narrative sculpture.”
