Wild Things: Bizarre Ceramic Sculptures by Ronit Baranga

Published Sep 27, 2019

Israeli artist Ronit Baranga creates unusual white clay sculptures featuring inanimate objects with human appendages.

“In her utensil pieces, she gives human features to objects we use every day, suggesting that they might find their own purpose: a mouth opens in a plate, perhaps to protest its use; a sugar bowl reaches out with human fingers and squeezes a nearby teapot. Her work highlights tension between human life and inanimate objects and also between competing emotions or concepts even in pieces with entirely human subjects.

Beauty and dissonance are intentional aspects of her work; in the film series Israeli Creators by Shachaf Dekel, she notes that ‘you always have an undercurrent of violence and pain and joy and tranquility….It’s never all beautiful or all bad’.”
