Tiny Interruptions: Public Interventions by Michael Pederson
Published Mar 18, 2026
Sydney-based artist Michael Pederson creates subtle public interventions that are easy to miss at first glance, but once spotted, are almost guaranteed to bring a smile to your face. His tiny installations can be found in gutters, walls, footpaths and forgotten corners, using miniature architecture, signs and objects to inject humor into ordinary urban surfaces.
A fenced patch of artificial grass becomes untouchable private property, a stormwater drain turns into the entrance to Wonderland, and a small staircase hidden inside a rock suggests a secret venue closed for a private event. Michael’s carefully fabricated objects are placed so naturally into the environment that they feel plausible for a moment before the absurdity clicks. He often borrows the language of civic signage, interface prompts and public warnings, rewriting it with dry wit, whether that means declaring a bad hiding place, marking the end of a path, or installing a turnstile at the entrance to a concrete void.
You can discover more of Michael’s amusing projects on his website and Instagram.
