The Denim Gorilla: An Anatomical Sculpture by Darwin, Sinke & van Tongeren
Published Mar 13, 2026
Created by Amsterdam-based fine taxidermy studio Darwin, Sinke & van Tongeren, The Denim Gorilla is a 3.5-metre anatomical art installation at the intersection of biology and fashion. Commissioned by G-Star RAW, the piece translates the brand’s anatomical design principles into a monumental physical form.
The sculpture took over one year, eight months and seven days to complete and draws directly from écorché traditions, where skin is removed to reveal the intricate muscular structure beneath the surface. To achieve this tactile realism, the artists used 65 kilometers of PETG filament for the 3D-printed core, which was then layered with 56 square meters of denim. The contrast between the rugged, indigo-dyed fabric and the precise, orange topstitching, spanning over 3,000 meters, highlights the granular texture of the 150 individual muscles.
The Denim Gorilla debuted at the opening of the new Art Zoo Museum in Amsterdam, where it stands somewhere between natural history, fashion experiment and contemporary installation.
