Temple of Boom: A Vivid Tribute to The Parthenon

Published Nov 25, 2022

The National Gallery of Victoria just unveiled ‘Temple of Boom’, an exuberant replica of The Parthenon in the heart of Melbourne, Australia.

The colorful large-scale art installation was designed by Melbourne-based architects Adam Newman and Kelvin Tsang to celebrate The Parthenon, a global architectural icon situated on the Acropolis in Athens.

This ‘miniature’ version of the real structure was built to a third scale of the original with the aim of inviting audiences to consider the effect of time on all architecture, as the structure gradually transforms with artworks and murals painted by local artists in three phases between November 2022 and August 2023.

Guest curated by Toby Benador from Just Another Agency, the first round of artworks will feature creations by artists Drez, Manda Lane, and David Lee Pereira.

To celebrate the opening of the Temple of Boom, NGV will present programs with the architects Adam Newman and Kelvin Tsang and the contemporary artists involved on the Commission on December 4. In addition to the talks, the day will include a DJ set by Greek architect and DJ John Tanner (one half of Wilson Tanner) and a VR experience transporting visitors to The Parthenon and allowing them to walk virtually around the Acropolis in Greece.
