Soft Bodies, Sharp Shapes: The Playful Figures of Mameko Maeda
Published Apr 29, 2026
Working across canvas, mural and sculpture, Japanese artist Mameko Maeda creates worlds where bodies stretch, fold and hold their shape.
That elasticity has a source. Drawing on a childhood background in modern and jazz dance, Mameko treats the body as something in constant flux, expanding and contracting under its own internal pressure. Her work reduces anatomy to its essentials, then rebuilds it through color blocks and clean contours, turning physical strain into something graphic and charged.
Across the work, bright, flat palettes meet subtle distortion, while references to mythology, animals and everyday gestures slip into the scenes without explanation. It’s a world with its own internal logic, one that rewards a second look.
