Second Life: Scrap Sculptures by Suraj Pai

Bangalore-based artist Suraj Pai transforms discarded objects into whimsical sculptures of animals, vehicles and abstract figures. Electrical cables become limbs and tentacles, worn tools form crocodile jaws, and broken plastic components are reassembled into mechanical characters.

Some of Suraj’s creations require a second look to understand how they were made. His remarkably convincing scooter, for instance, is built from broken computer mouse parts and other plastic scraps, with familiar fragments carefully arranged to recreate its bodywork, seat, wheels and handlebars. Elsewhere, shift knobs become oversized heads, coconut fibers suggest animal features, and flexible tubing gives his figures a loose sense of movement.

Suraj’s practice explores the relationship between waste, sustainability and sculptural form. Working instinctively with the shapes and textures of collected materials, he uncovers new possibilities in objects that might otherwise be overlooked, balancing industrial components with organic silhouettes and playful storytelling.
