Scrap to Sculpture: The Art of Chris Hynes
Published Jul 16, 2025
American artist Chris Hynes has spent over a decade turning junkyard metal into hauntingly beautiful sculptures that fuse the brutality of man-made materials with the perfection of nature. A graduate of the Ringling School of Art and Design, he first experimented with scrap metal under the guidance of fine artist John Williams, and it has been his primary medium ever since.
Chris scours local scrap yards for discarded metal parts, letting each found fragment spark an idea. He then uses clay to introduce a softness and organic dimension, merging it with the cold, harsh edges of the metal. His recent pieces highlight critically endangered species, visually representing their fragile forms caught between the hope of survival and the threat of extinction.
If you’d like to see even more of his unique pieces, head over to his website and give him a follow on Instagram.
