Refuge de Barroude: A Stunning Safe Haven
Published Oct 28, 2024
Refuge de Barroude is a striking structure located in the breathtaking Pyrenees National Park in France. Designed by architecture firm Snøhetta, the refuge serves as a crucial stop-off point for hikers traversing the Haute Route des Pyrénées.
The Refuge de Barroude replaces a previous structure lost to a fire a decade ago, and was thoughtfully designed to preserve the integrity of its surroundings while offering a safe haven for adventurers. With its swooping, curved form, the building seamlessly integrates into the mountainous landscape, echoing the natural topography and enhancing the site’s grandeur without overshadowing it.
Inside, the refuge caters to the needs of both hikers and park staff. It includes dormitories that provide cozy accommodations, a bar and a restaurant that opens onto an outdoor terrace.
