Rainbow-Colored Art Installations by Jane Cheek

Published Dec 19, 2022

American artist Jane Cheek creates immersive kinetic art installations composed of colorful pieces of mylar.

“Her most recent installation, ‘We Wondered If We Could Reach Its End’, is a kinetic rainbow based on the artist’s personal experience of coming out as bi and seeing a rainbow that felt like a big, warm, welcoming, hug from the universe. In response to the recent onslaught of anti-queer legislation and sentiment, Cheek wanted to create a message of love and hope for the community and used her coming out experience as the inspiration for the piece.”

The suspended mylar pieces create a rainbow-like effect, each one carrying its own unique pattern of swirls and shapes. As viewers move around the room, the light shifts and creates a mesmerizing effect.

“My colorful and whimsical work is universally accessible, challenging the perception that our differences have to be larger than life, and I hope to create connections between the viewer and the work that bridge those differences.”
