People Mountain People Sea: Bold Artworks by Gary Card

People Mountain People Sea is the first major solo exhibition by British multi-disciplinary artist and set designer Gary Card. Hosted at Oil Street Art Space in Hong Kong until July 28th, the show is a vivid exploration of Gary’s enthusiastic and visually joyful language, inviting viewers into a world where familiar symbols are re-envisioned through an intoxicating blend of cultural elements.

Drawing inspiration from the popular chinglish idiom, this series embodies the essence of duality and reinterpreted meanings. Spanning both the outdoor and indoor spaces of the gallery, the exhibition showcases Gary’s ambition to encapsulate the dynamic vibrancy of Hong Kong. This is achieved through an array of large-scale sculptures, paintings and video works, all presented with the artist’s acute spatial sensibilities honed through years of set design work. Among these, the standout piece is a 15-foot sculpture titled “The Dream of Mr Somebody,” which graces the lawn of Oil Street Art Space. Embellished with memorable icons that the artist has collected during his various explorations around Hong Kong, this striking piece serves as a symbolic nexus of the exhibition’s thematic focus.
