Once: Sharp Packaging Design for a One-of-a-Kind 40-Year-Old Brandy

Armenian studio Backbone Branding has created a striking identity and packaging system for Once, an ultra-premium brandy distilled in 1980 and matured for four decades in oak casks. True to the agency’s distinctive approach, the design pairs bold conceptual thinking with meticulous craftsmanship, transforming the bottle itself into a physical expression of the product’s story.

Rather than treating the cask as a mere vessel, the studio made it inseparable from the final presentation. The circular bottle is wrapped in a steel band and framed by segments of oak, echoing the structure of the barrel that shaped the spirit for 40 years. A rich amber glass face evokes the deep color of the aged brandy, while restrained gold typography reinforces its luxurious character without overwhelming the composition.

The presentation continues with an equally dramatic display case. Curved wooden panels unfold like the staves of a barrel opening apart, gradually revealing the bottle at the center. The reveal turns the simple act of unboxing into a ceremonial experience, reflecting the rarity of a spirit that exists in a finite supply of just 30,000 bottles. Appropriately named Once, the brand acknowledges its own scarcity, emphasizing that each bottle brings the collection one step closer to disappearing forever.
