Ndebele Superhero: The Vibrant Art of Zana Masombuka

South African artist Zana Masombuka, also known as Ndebele Superhero, stages striking portraits that carry her heritage and visual culture into the present. Raised in Siyabuswa in rural KwaNdebele, Zana draws heavily from Ndebele aesthetics and customs, using her work to explore how these cultural practices can evolve without losing their connection to the generations that shaped them.

Her photographs are bursting with color and symbolism. Bold body paint, stacked metallic jewelry, feathers, beads and elaborate headpieces are paired with playing cards, combs, matches and other everyday objects, turning familiar materials into unexpected costumes and visual codes. Zana often places herself at the center of these images, adopting different personas through performance and styling to examine ideas around culture, ritual, modernity and self-expression.
