Molten Drama: Volcanic Photography by Siggeir Hafsteinsson
Published Mar 20, 2026
Back in 2021, Icelandic photographer Siggeir Hafsteinsson, also known as Sig Vicious, got remarkably close to document an active volcanic eruption, turning extreme geological events into images charged with scale, color and tension. Shot around the Fagradalsfjall volcano on the Reykjanes Peninsula, his photographs move between wide views of erupting craters and close studies of lava carving bright paths through dark volcanic ground.
Siggeir’s photographs are a striking study of contrast. Dense black terrain frames glowing rivers of orange, while towering smoke columns shift from deep red to violet and electric blue as daylight changes. In some images, tiny human figures appear along ridgelines, giving immediate perspective to eruptions that throw molten lava high into the air every few minutes.
You can explore more of Siggeir’s work on his website and follow his latest adventures on Instagram.
