Mirror Mirror: Interactive Art Installation by SOFTlab

In 2019, the city of Alexandria, Virginia was graced with a captivating public art installation that caught the attention of locals and visitors alike. Aptly named Mirror Mirror, this interactive artwork was conceived and created by SOFTlab, a New York-based design studio known for creating innovative pieces that combines art and technology.
Mirror Mirror was displayed in Waterfront Park, a popular gathering spot for the local community. The interactive installation was a semi-circular structure composed of dozens of mirrored prisms. These prisms responded to movement and sound, creating a dynamic visual effect that changed depending on the viewer’s perspective.
The design of Mirror Mirror was inspired by the Jones Point Lighthouse, a historic landmark located near the installation site. The use of mirrors in the artwork was a nod to the lighthouse’s Fresnel lens, a type of compact lens originally developed for lighthouses.
As night fell, the installation took on a new dimension. The structure was illuminated, casting vibrant reflections onto the surrounding area and creating a mesmerizing light show that could be seen from afar. This illuminated spectacle added to the allure of Alexandria’s waterfront, making Mirror Mirror a must-visit attraction during its tenure.
